Would you wear articles of clothing, if you knew that the material used was made out of...goo?
By goo, i mean slime...by slime i mean...the HAGFISH!
The jawless, spineless hagfish is a primitive creature that lives at the bottom of the ocean and dates back as far as 500 million years - but it exudes a very special slime, which could provide the clothing of the future.
This slime is secreted from highly specialized glands that run along the side of its body. When this slime mixes with sea water it expands, creating huge amounts of clear slime composed of super strong fibres. When you stretch the fibres in water and then dry them out, they become silky.
This special slime is in fact a defense mechanism to ward off predators. The video below shows what happens when a predator, like a shark, attacks the Hagfish.
I find these sort of discoveries very intriguing as im fascinated by innovations that are based off nature! What do you think?
