OUYA-AAAAH

Ouya! The worlds first crowd-sourced video games console which recieved its funding ($8M) through kickstarter has been launched in the market! It currently retails for 99$ in the USA, and 65 Pounds in the UK.

Apart from being dirt cheap, something like the Rasberry Π, (a micro computer that sells for around the same price), it will also offer a huge variety of games. Most games will cost approximately the same as App's on the Istore I.E. 0.99c-9.99$, and will be developed from large game publishers and independant developers.

This is amazing because it breaks up the market of Sony and Microsoft and can help make the industry a lot more competitive. This is crucial because for the last 3 or so years, the industry has seen much slower rates of growth, and in some cases, losses.

There arent that many game publishers anymore sadly, as many have been acquired through acquisitions, and in the process valuable franchises have been lost.

There has also been a shift in the demand of the game context. Majority of gamers want insane graphics, explosions, hot chicks, violence, futuristic weapons, aliens, drugs etc (Basically Michael Bay video game adaptations)

Large budgets are being allocated to video game franchises to improve graphics, something which is becoming more and more important to some gamers. However it has meant that there is less attention being paid to how the game feels, the storyline and plot. An obvious example of this would be comparing  Call of Duty: Modern Warfare VS The legend of Zelda. While the graphics in CoD are amazing, and really evoke a feeling of being in warfare; it does nothing to stir emotions or feelings towards the character. On the other hand Zelda really makes you become attatched to Link, the main protagonist. And even though in the game he never speaks, you can still relate to him or wish you were in his place completing quests and saving the world. (Its worth noting that Zelda originally on N64, had amazing graphics for its time. Yet for the sake of comparison i chose it because i feel its captures the essence of intimacy between players and characters.)

Basically, what im trying to get at, is that through the Ouya we can expect to see a rise in the number of "old fashioned video games" with inspiration drawn from new releases because there are a lot more independant developers out there. A lack of hollywood type budgets will also create an opportunity for publishers to do more with less! Effectively brining value to the video game industry and its customers.

Alas, I have no quarrels with good graphics, but it does bother me when too much emphasis has been put on the presentation, and no substance is present. This also leads to shorter gameplay because the CD cannot store enough data to make the game longer.

Why SHOULD I pay 60-70Euros for new games that i can beat in 2-3 days?

How is it games on older consoles, could take "ages" to beat? Again, im going to use Zelda as an example. I remember playing that game for atleast 2 months to try and beat it. I was quite young at the time, but even then, there was a lot of gameplay to be expirienced!
